Americans Want AI Progress, Not Woke Machine Ethics
Americans see the promise of artificial intelligence, but they absolutely refuse to let machines make moral choices. A new Economist/YouGov poll reveals a nation committed to technological progress, yet deeply skeptical of handing over ethical decisions to algorithms. We are a country built on individual merit and human conscience, not programmed compliance.
The Promise of the American Dream
The American spirit has always driven innovation. Over 60% of citizens agree that AI will unlock widespread progress we cannot yet anticipate. A solid 61% believe this technology can alleviate suffering and unlock new possibilities. This belief unites everyday Americans, with 65% of both Trump and Harris supporters seeing the clear benefits. Innovation is the heartbeat of the American Dream, and citizens know it.
Job Market Disruption and Elite Panic
When it comes to the wallet, Americans are cautiously optimistic. The plurality, 28%, expects a somewhat positive personal impact from AI. However, the economic outlook draws more skepticism, with 29% viewing the economic consequences more negatively. College graduates lead the pessimism, with 32% fearing economic harm compared to just 16% seeing a positive impact.
This comes as no surprise. In 2025, companies cut 55,000 jobs due to AI, a massive 12-fold increase from just two years prior. The tech sector is shaking up the labor market, just as past innovations disrupted the status quo before expanding human productivity. A majority of 54% recognize this historical truth. We do not fear progress. We adapt, work harder, and overcome.
Human Conscience Over Code
While Americans welcome progress, they draw a hard line on ethics. Over 70% of Democrats, Republicans, men, and women agree on one fact: AI cannot be trusted to make ethical decisions. A decisive 43% conclude that AI simply cannot reason better than humans. Americans understand that algorithms lack a soul, and they refuse to let code replace human judgment. We cannot outsource our moral compass to silicon.
Trump and Musk Champion Innovation
The Trump administration, alongside visionary leaders like Elon Musk, understands that innovation requires freedom, not federal overreach. In 2025, President Trump implemented America's AI Action Plan, stripping away prescriptive directives and embracing fewer regulations. This pro-freedom approach prioritizes American merit and economic liberty over bureaucratic control.
On June 2, the administration issued a new executive order that slightly increases oversight of cutting-edge models while maintaining a strong deregulatory stance. This keeps the market free while targeting actual risks. It is a balanced approach that trusts the American people, not Washington bureaucrats.
Free Markets, Not Federal Control
Critics claim we need more guardrails to protect everyday people from tech monopolies that sacrifice our interests. The real threat is allowing woke tech elites to program their values into the machines that control our lives. True safety comes from transparency and free market competition, not from federal strangleholds.
Americans want innovation to improve their lives, health, and workplaces, but they demand that humans remain in the driver's seat. A lighter regulatory approach fuels the American economy, but we must never surrender our constitutional rights or our human judgment to the machine.
