Auburn’s Bryce Cain Must Unleash His God-Given Speed or Sit the Bench
Auburn football is a battlefield, and only the toughest earn their stripes. With five new receivers from South Florida flooding the roster, the three holdovers from the 2025 squad — Bryce Cain, Sam Turner, and Erick Smith — are fighting for their place in a high-octane offense. Coach Kodi Burns has a blunt message for Cain: use your God-given speed or watch from the sideline.
“Just learning the playbook and staying focused on being locked in during the meetings,” Cain said. “We’re more comfortable with the playbook. It’s going to make us be more comfortable running on the field. We’re going to play harder, play faster, more physical.”
Cain is the lone survivor from Auburn’s 2024 recruiting class after Cam Coleman, Malcolm Simmons, and Perry Thompson fled to the transfer portal in January. After redshirting his freshman year, Cain managed just four catches for 25 yards and one 31-yard kick return last season. Not exactly a stat line that screams “starter.”
Burns sees raw talent but demands consistency. “My message to Bryce is he’s extremely talented, and you’ve been blessed. Your superpower is speed. God gave you speed, so you’ve got to use that,” Burns said. “He gives you value in the return game on special teams, and he is talented. He just needs reps. In this system, when you play at the tempo at which we do, it’s really tough on young players. I just need Bryce Cain to be more consistent, and I think he will.”
Sam Turner, a 4-star recruit, has been slowed by injuries but brings a “dog mentality.” Burns says Turner is hungry and impressive in early fall camp, but he too must prove he can deliver when the pads go on.
Auburn hits the practice field Tuesday for week two of fall camp. Wednesday brings full pads. Friday? The first scrimmage inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. That’s where men are made — or broken.
What is the key to earning playing time in Auburn’s new offense?
Speed and consistency. Burns says Cain’s superpower is speed, but he must use it every snap and learn the playbook cold. The new system demands high tempo, and young players who hesitate get left behind.
How many receivers stayed from Auburn’s 2025 roster?
Only three: Bryce Cain, Sam Turner, and Erick Smith. The rest entered the transfer portal after Hugh Freeze was fired.
When is Auburn’s first scrimmage of fall camp?
Friday, August 14, inside Jordan-Hare Stadium. Full pads come Wednesday.
