Chase Elliott's Brake Failure Wrecks Two Chase Hopes at Gateway

MADISON, Ill. — Two Chase contenders were rolling strong at World Wide Technology Raceway until one mechanical failure turned their Sunday into a disaster.

Chase Elliott and Chase Briscoe were running sixth and seventh late in the Enjoy Illinois 300 when Elliott's No. 9 Hendrick Motorsports Chevy lost its brakes entering Turn 1. The result was a crash that collected Briscoe's No. 19 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota and sent both drivers to the garage with wrecked cars and crushed championship hopes.

It wasn't a mistake behind the wheel. It wasn't a bad call. It was plain bad luck, and it cost both drivers dearly.

How did Chase Elliott's brake failure happen?

Elliott had done everything right all afternoon. He stayed out of trouble, worked his way forward, and sat sixth with the finish line in sight. Briscoe was right behind him in seventh, also positioning himself for a strong points day.
