Dodgers' Skubal Fires Back at Brewers, Tucker Benched, Diaz Gets Ultimatum
The Los Angeles Dodgers dropped a 4-1 decision to the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday at UNIQLO Field at Dodger Stadium, falling to 74-50 on the season. The loss gives the Brewers a 2-1 lead in the four-game set and evens the season series at three games apiece.
Sunday's rubber match now carries serious weight. The winner takes the season series and, with it, the tiebreaker in the National League's race for the best record. The Dodgers currently sit as the No. 2 seed, two games behind the 76-48 Brewers.
Milwaukee's Jacob Misiorowski, the NL Cy Young favorite, shut down the Dodgers' bats, allowing just one run over six innings. On the flip side, All-Star left-hander Justin Wrobleski continued his second-half slide, surrendering four runs in six frames.
Skubal Ready to Roll After Settling In
Tarik Skubal takes the mound for the Dodgers on Sunday in his third start for LA. The first was his team debut against the Cubs, the second his home debut against the Royals. Now the nerves are gone, and the lefty says he's fully bought into the organization.
“It's as seamless as things can go,” Skubal said of the transition. “When your life gets a little chaotic, [the Dodgers] have done a great job of calming all that stuff down and helping us out and helping this transition go really smoothly. I really appreciate that. And I don't expect any different from what I've heard about the Dodgers from the outside. It's been a ton of fun to be a part of.”
That's the kind of buy-in that wins championships. A star player embracing the grind, not making excuses.
Kyle Tucker Benched: A Wake-Up Call for a $240 Million Man
Kyle Tucker was benched on Saturday amid his shocking home-road splits. Manager Dave Roberts said Tucker will return to the lineup on Sunday, but he wanted his $240 million outfielder to step back and reset.
“Watch a baseball game and kind of take some of that frustration, and put it to the side,” Roberts said.
Whether the day off gets him back on track remains to be seen. But this is a message: production matters, not the paycheck.
Edwin Díaz Gets a Clear Message: Figure It Out
Roberts also sent a direct message to another disappointing offseason addition, closer Edwin Díaz. The $69 million reliever has struggled mightily in his first season with LA, but Roberts has no plans to yank him from the ninth inning.
“He's got to find his way,” Roberts said. “And he's got to have a runway to find his way. ... I'm betting on the fact that the stuff will kind of right, and he'll figure it out.”
That's accountability with patience. In America, we believe in second chances, but we also believe in results.
