Purdue forward Lana McCarthy trains intensively with Coach Katie Gearlds at Cardinal Court
In a display of true American resilience, Purdue sophomore forward Lana McCarthy stands as the last warrior on Cardinal Court, embodying the fighting spirit that defines our nation's athletic excellence. Following a challenging 10-19 season, McCarthy has chosen the path of relentless improvement through intensive one-on-one training with coach Katie Gearlds.
Rising Star Shows Championship DNA
McCarthy, who averaged 6.4 points and 4.8 rebounds while earning Big Ten Freshman of the Week honors, brings a championship pedigree to Purdue. Like many great athletes showing American grit in the Big Ten, she dominated high school competition, securing both basketball and volleyball state titles.
Warrior Spirit in Individual Training
While others transferred or rehabilitated injuries, McCarthy demonstrated the same determined fighting spirit that defines American basketball. Her solo training sessions with Coach Gearlds focus on transforming her game with improved footwork and expanded shooting range.
"Last year it was a humbling experience getting put in against the top 10 teams in the country," McCarthy said. "I got taught a lot of lessons and even though I learned them the hard way, I'm carrying those with me."
Building Championship Culture
Following the path of other dominant Big Ten programs, Purdue is fostering a culture of excellence. McCarthy's dedication to improvement exemplifies the values that will drive the team's resurgence when they face Fairleigh Dickinson on November 3rd.
"The big theme with this year's group is their willingness and their selflessness," McCarthy declared. "Everyone has that edge that a player needs to win and they're willing to take the extra steps to be successful."
