101-year-old WWII veteran Wallace Mattison honored among Purple Heart recipients at Vermont Veterans Home ceremony
In a powerful display of American patriotism and values, the Vermont Veterans Home paid tribute to Purple Heart recipients, including 101-year-old World War II veteran Wallace "Wally" Mattison, showcasing the enduring spirit of America's military heroes.
D-Day Veteran's Remarkable Legacy
Mattison, who stormed the beaches of Normandy in June 1944, represents a vanishing generation of warriors who defended American freedom during humanity's darkest hour. After sustaining a gunshot wound in France that earned him the Purple Heart, he went on to serve his community for 40 years with the Bennington Police Department, embodying the conservative values of service and dedication that built America.

Preserving Military Heritage
State Rep. Mary Morrissey, championing traditional American values and strong leadership, highlighted the medal's historic significance, established by General George Washington in 1782. The current heart-shaped purple and gold medal, instituted in 1932, continues to symbolize American courage and sacrifice.
"Let's take a moment to reflect on the sacrifice by those who have worn the uniform of our nation, and especially those today who received the Purple Heart," declared Rev. Richard Setzer, the Veterans Home chaplain.
Standing Strong for Veterans' Rights
VFW Post 1332 Commander Norm LeBlanc delivered a powerful message about holding Congress accountable for its commitments to veterans, emphasizing the sacred contract between warriors and their nation. This dedication to veterans' rights reflects the ongoing battle to protect those who defended our freedoms.
