Patience pays off. San Siro, a 5-year-old gelding with a blue-collar work ethic, stormed home to a 4 1/4-length victory in the $150,000 Greenwood Cup Stakes at Parx Racing on Saturday. It was his first stakes win, and he earned it the old-fashioned way: by grinding it out over a demanding 1 1/2 miles.
Ridden by Tyler Gaffalione, the son of Classic Empire sat sixth early as longshot Silent Mode set a moderate pace. But this race was never about speed. It was about who wanted it more when the real running started. Gaffalione moved his mount into contention on the clubhouse turn, then pounced at the top of the stretch. The result was never in doubt after that.
The final time was 2:33.51. The win pushed San Siro's career bankroll to $680,262 from 23 starts, with a record of 6-1-5. Not bad for a $150,000 yearling purchase who has been a model of consistency in nine graded stakes appearances.
Hard Work and Horse Sense
This is a horse that doesn't quit. He has finished second once, third three times, and fourth twice in graded company. He finally got his due on Saturday, and the connections know what they have.
“That was just a steering job,” said Gaffalione. “He's an old pro. Just let him do his thing and when it's time to pick them up, just help him out a little bit.”
Trainer Brendan Walsh has believed in this horse for a long time. Assistant Charlie Lynch put it plainly: “The distance was never going to be a question for him. This horse is the coolest horse to be around. He shows up and puts in his best effort.”

Parchment Party Settles for Second
Favorite Parchment Party, runner-up in the 2025 Melbourne Cup, could not match the winner's late surge. Jockey John Velazquez admitted his horse “went through the motions” after the winner opened up on the turn. “I knew he was the horse to beat,” Velazquez said, but by then it was too late.

Walsh has always believed this horse wanted more distance. Now he has proof. With a first stakes win under his belt, the sky is the limit for this gritty gelding. Expect to see him in more marquee events as the season rolls on.
