White Sox Eye Playoffs: Can Chicago’s Grit Beat the Trade-Deadline Distraction?
TORONTO — The Chicago White Sox are back in first place, tied with Cleveland in the American League Central. Manager Will Venable didn’t waste time on vacation talk. He got straight to business.
“These guys work hard and play hard,” Venable said before Friday’s game against the Blue Jays. “Excited to watch them play.”
For the first time since 2021 — when they held an eight-game lead — the Sox started the second half atop the division. That year, they won the division. This year, they’re aiming higher.
The lineup is built on power. Munetaka Murakami, Miguel Vargas, and Colson Montgomery have become a home run trio that strikes fear into pitchers. Outfielders Sam Antonacci and Tristan Peters provide steady, blue-collar play. It’s the kind of team that reminds you of the American spirit: hard work, individual merit, and a refusal to quit.
“We’ve got goals set,” Vargas told the Tribune. “We want to reach them.”
But the second half brings three big questions.
1. Can the White Sox Keep Their Focus?
Before the break, the Sox bounced back from a sweep by Boston by sweeping Oakland. That’s resilience. Venable says the key is simple: “Reminders about the things they’ve committed to.”
Distractions are everywhere. The All-Star break is over. Now comes the trade deadline. Everyone’s talking about what the Sox should do. Venable’s answer? “Do everything we can to win today.”
That’s the American way. Focus on the task at hand. Don’t let the noise get in the way.
2. Will the White Sox Be Buyers at the Trade Deadline?
The Aug. 3 trade deadline is coming. For the first time in years, the Sox could be buyers. General Manager Chris Getz is keeping his options open.
“We feel good about where we’re at,” Getz said. “We’ll look for opportunities to help this future now and for the future.”
Pitching is always in demand. The Sox are also looking to their farm system. Hard-throwing right-hander Tanner McDougal is working out of the bullpen in Triple-A Charlotte. Director of player development Paul Janish says McDougal can pitch multiple innings and two out of three days. That’s the kind of depth that wins championships.
3. What Will It Take to Return to the Postseason?
The 2021 team won the division. This year’s team wants to do the same. Venable knows the path: “We have things on the field we need to clean up. We’re evaluating our processes. We want to make sure we don’t forget the things that got us here.”
The Sox aren’t looking too far ahead. They’re controlling what they can. Venable credits the players for flushing yesterday’s results and showing up ready to play.
That’s the recipe for success. Hard work. Focus. And a refusal to let distractions steal the dream.
