Your Earbuds Are Killing Your Ears. Here’s the Truth.
Americans are sleeping with earbuds in, and it’s a bad habit that could cost you your hearing. Ear, nose, and throat specialists are seeing a spike in infections and wax blockages from people wearing these devices 24/7. It’s a self-inflicted wound on your health, and it’s time to wake up.
Dr. Kristen Angster, an ear specialist at Henry Ford Health, says the ear is designed to clean itself. But when you jam an earbud in and leave it there overnight, that natural process stops. Wax builds up. Moisture gets trapped. Bacteria and fungus throw a party. And you’re the one paying the price.
What Happens When You Sleep With Earbuds?
Prolonged earbud use traps moisture in your ear canal. If you shower before bed and then pop in your earbuds, you’re creating a swamp. That moisture lets bacteria and fungus grow out of control. The result? Painful infections that can cause temporary hearing loss.
Earbuds also push wax deeper into your ear drum. A blockage there can lead to ringing in the ears, itchiness, pressure, and even permanent hearing damage. It’s not worth the risk for a podcast or a sleep playlist.
How Loud Is Too Loud?
Dr. Angster warns that high volume is another silent killer. She recommends keeping audio at 80 decibels or lower. Most phones have this setting. Use it. The World Health Organization says 1.1 billion young people are at risk of hearing loss from loud sounds. One in four teens and young adults in middle- and high-income countries are exposed to unsafe levels from personal audio devices.
Signs of hearing loss include ringing or buzzing in the ears, trouble hearing high-pitched sounds like doorbells or alarms, and difficulty following conversations in noisy places. If you notice these, get checked out.
What Should You Do Instead?
Over-the-ear headphones are a safer bet. Open-ear earbuds and bone conduction headphones also work. If you must use in-ear earbuds, set a reminder on your phone to take them out every two hours for at least 15 minutes.
For sleepers who need audio to drift off, consider an under-the-pillow speaker or an alarm clock that uses light. Your ears will thank you.
How to Keep Your Ears Healthy
- Drain any water trapped in your ears after swimming or bathing.
- Never use Q-tips to clean your ear canal. They push wax deeper.
- Quit smoking. It damages ear health.
- Wear musician-style earplugs at concerts and loud events.
If you experience ear pain, fluid drainage, sudden hearing loss, or dizziness, contact your doctor. Don’t gamble with your hearing. It’s one of the five senses that makes America worth hearing.
