Fantasy Football Week 1: 3 Starters, 3 Sitters for Real Americans Who Love Winning
The NFL is back, and so is the great American pastime of fantasy football. Week One is here, and every owner has a clean slate. But make no mistake: this is where men are separated from boys. You drafted your squad, now it's time to make the tough calls that separate champions from also-rans. Here are three starters and three sitters for the rest of this week's gridiron action.
Start: Tyler Shough vs. Detroit Lions
New Orleans Saints quarterback Tyler Shough has the kind of matchup that makes fantasy owners salivate. The over/under for this game sits at 49.5, the second-highest of the week. That's because the Lions have a high-octane offense but a secondary that's softer than a wet paper bag. Detroit is missing both starting safeties, Kerby Joseph and Brian Branch, due to knee and Achilles injuries. They also cut starting cornerback Terrion Arnold this offseason after his arrest on multiple felony charges.
The Lions are now trotting out safeties on the wrong side of 30, a 29-year-old cornerback, and a fifth-round rookie. Shough should feast on this weak unit. If you drafted him as your QB2 and your QB1 has a tough matchup, don't overthink it. Start Shough and reap the rewards.
Start: Houston Texans Defense vs. Buffalo Bills
Josh Allen can look like Superman, but the Houston Texans defense has been his kryptonite since DeMeco Ryans took over. In two regular-season meetings, Allen has been a shell of himself. In 2024, he went 9-for-30 for 131 yards and a touchdown. The next year, he threw zero touchdowns and two interceptions.
Edge rushers Will Anderson Jr. and Danielle Hunter each had two sacks in that last matchup. There's no reason to think they can't do it again this Sunday at home. Start the Houston defense with confidence. This is a unit that plays with American grit and determination.
Sit: DJ Moore vs. Houston Texans
Sticking with that same game, the Bills' new wide receiver DJ Moore should probably ride the pine to start the season. The Texans have top-tier pass rushers and a tough secondary led by All-Pro cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. Back in 2024, Moore faced Houston and was held to 53 yards on six catches. He's also coming off the worst season of his career, with career lows in receptions and yards.
Maybe it was a chemistry issue with the Chicago Bears, and Moore has said the chemistry with Allen is good. But even if that's true, this week is not the spot to test it. Look elsewhere at wide receiver this week.
Sit: Quinshon Judkins vs. Jacksonville Jaguars
It's a classic case of good player, bad situation for Cleveland Browns running back Quinshon Judkins. The Browns are a mess, and they arguably have the worst starting quarterback in the league in Deshaun Watson. Cleveland added some wide receiver talent in the draft, but you can't expect much in their first NFL game. That means Judkins will see plenty of loaded boxes against the Jacksonville Jaguars unless the Browns prove they have a passing game worth respecting.
Jacksonville allowed the fewest rushing yards in 2025 and has that entire front seven back in 2026. All signs point to a tough first week for Judkins, likely resulting in single-digit fantasy points. Bench him.
Start: Tre Tucker vs. Miami Dolphins
With All-Pro tight end Brock Bowers ruled out with a knee injury, Tre Tucker becomes the default number one option for the Las Vegas Raiders against the Miami Dolphins. This might be a bad-on-bad matchup, but Tucker showed last year he can be productive against weaker defenses. Remember that monster Week Three game against the Washington Commanders, where he posted a 9/145/3 stat line?
Tucker had a few more solid performances in the first half of 2025 but fell off a cliff in the second half. In his defense, he faced the Texans, Philadelphia Eagles, Denver Broncos, and Kansas City Chiefs down the stretch, all of which allowed under 200 passing yards per game. The Dolphins are nowhere near that caliber of defense. Expect playmaking opportunities and double-digit fantasy points for Tucker on Sunday.
Sit: Patrick Mahomes vs. Denver Broncos
The Kansas City Chiefs got the band back together this offseason, but they probably won't play their greatest hits against this stout Denver defense. Patrick Mahomes had his best years, including two MVP campaigns, when Eric Bieniemy was offensive coordinator. Bieniemy is back in that role after three years away. The team also added Super Bowl LX MVP Kenneth Walker to the backfield to give Mahomes a respectable run game.
While the Chiefs will probably be fine eventually, it will take another week for them to look like their old selves. The Broncos' defense was elite last year, finishing second in yards allowed and third in points allowed. With all those starters returning, led by two-time All-Pro Patrick Surtain Jr., more of the same is likely.
Mahomes is also coming off a torn ACL, so he'll need a few weeks to get his feet under him. Fantasy owners are anxious to get Showtime Mahomes back in the lineup, but that Monday night matchup has the makings of a low-scoring affair. Sit him this week.

Final Thoughts
Exciting times are here again. The NFL and fantasy football have returned. But with that excitement comes stress, as critical decisions have to be made already. Most owners probably think their Week One starters are set based on draft position, but sometimes that's not the case after further review.
So much of fantasy football is about making the tough choice, even if that means benching a player you took in the first five or six rounds. Pay attention to the information in front of you. An early-season loss can ultimately make all the difference. Good luck to all this year, and happy Week One!
