Iowa GOP Star Zach Lahn: Democrats Are Faking It, And Voters Aren't Buying It

Republican gubernatorial candidate Zach Lahn is calling out his Democratic opponent Rob Sand for hiding behind a mask of phony centrism. In a hard-hitting interview on the 'Ruthless Podcast,' Lahn declared that the Democratic Party's radical agenda is a loser in the Heartland.

'They are realizing that their ideas don't sell,' Lahn said. 'So what do they have to do? They have to pretend to be somebody they're not.'

Lahn, a farmer and businessman who shocked the political establishment by defeating Trump-endorsed Rep. Randy Feenstra in a crowded June primary, is now the GOP standard-bearer. He's since earned President Donald Trump's full endorsement and the backing of HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.'s Make America Healthy Again PAC.

What Are Democrats Hiding From Iowa Voters?

Lahn pointed directly to Sand's cozy ties with the national progressive machine. Sand has accepted endorsements from Senator Elizabeth Warren, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz. Lahn says that's the real Sand, not the moderate he pretends to be on the campaign trail.

'A lot of our campaign, even in the primary, people said, 'you can't run a Republican primary running on the issues you're running on,'' Lahn explained. 'And I said, 'We can because this is what the people actually care about.' I know because I'm with them. I'm one of them.'

Does Rob Sand Have a Future in National Politics?

Lahn didn't mince words about Sand's ambitions. He noted that the New York Times recently pegged Sand as a likely candidate for a presidential run. Lahn sees that as proof that Sand's heart isn't in Iowa.

'I don't want to go anywhere else but this seat to be the governor,' Lahn said. 'I want to help make Iowa the best place to raise a family, start businesses, all of these things. And I think we've got a good foundation right now.'

The Sand campaign fired back, calling Lahn a 'career political operative' who can't answer basic questions about where he lives. But Lahn's grassroots support tells a different story. He's connecting with real Iowans on kitchen-table issues like agriculture and healthcare.

Why Are Republicans Winning in Iowa?

Podcast co-host Josh Holmes summed it up: 'What has happened to the Democratic Party over the last 20 years, in particular in states like yours, is that they just no longer resonate. They're culturally divorced from what it is that families are dealing with on a day-to-day basis.'

No Democrat has won Iowa's governor's race since 2006. The state has gone for Trump handily in three straight presidential elections. Lahn is betting that the same winning formula applies in 2026.

Lahn's interview was part of the 'Ruthless' Midterm Interview Series, which has already featured candidates in 18 states. With the November midterms approaching, Iowa is shaping up to be a battleground where conservative values still matter.
