Salmon Explosion After Dam Demolition Proves Nature Knows Best
In a stunning victory for common sense and the American spirit, the removal of four obsolete dams on the Klamath River has triggered a salmon population explosion that has scientists scratching their heads and celebrating. The Klamath River, a lifeline for southern Oregon and Northern California for millions of years, was choked by four hydroelectric dams built in the early 1900s by the California Oregon Power Company. Barry McCovey Jr., director of the Yurok Tribal Fisheries Department, told the San Francisco Chronicle: 'The speed and scale of the river's recovery has exceeded our expectations and even the most optimistic scientific modeling, proving that when the barriers fall, nature has an incredible power to heal itself.'
What About Water Quality?
Before the dams came down, 58% of water samples failed public safety standards. After two years without dams, 100% of samples passed. The river is cleaner, cooler, and healthier. Toxic algae blooms remain a concern, but the trend is clear: remove the junk, and the water fixes itself.
What Else Changed?
Over 1,300 acres of former reservoir land are being replanted with 19 billion seeds of native vegetation. Birds are nesting again. The river even found its ancient path, buried under a century of sediment. It is as if the water remembered where it belonged.
This project cost over $450 million, but it was a bargain compared to the endless subsidies and environmental lawsuits that kept those dams standing. The Klamath River is now a living lesson: when you stop fighting nature and start working with it, everybody wins.
