USC Trojans Look Like Big Ten Contenders After Dominant Game 2 Win
The USC Trojans didn't just win their second game of the season. They made a statement. After a solid opener, the Trojans took everything up a notch against Fresno State, cleaning up their flaws on both sides of the ball. This wasn't just a victory. It was a declaration that this team is ready to compete with the big boys of the Big Ten.
Jayden Maiava is playing like a man possessed. The quarterback put on a Heisman-level performance, and freshman Jide Abasiri has already become a household name in Los Angeles. Here is what we learned about the Trojans after their second straight win.
Jayden Maiava Is Playing Like a Top Quarterback in America
In Game 1, Maiava managed the game and executed Lincoln Riley's plan to perfection. In Game 2, the leash came off. Maiava let it rip, and the results were spectacular. His confidence is through the roof. He is decisive, efficient, and most importantly, he is not making the silly mistakes that cost this team last season. He looks like a top quarterback in the country, and he is ready to go toe-to-toe with the best arms in the Big Ten Conference.
Trent Mosley Is Maiava's Go-To Weapon
Two games in a row, when Maiava needed to move the chains, he found freshman receiver Trent Mosley. Mosley catches everything thrown his way, and when he and Maiava connect, it usually results in a big gain. This connection looks special, and they are just getting started. Mosley is Maiava's favorite target, and so far, he has made his quarterback look right every single time.
USC Freshmen Are Growing Up Fast
The young Trojans took a little time to get acclimated in Game 1. That was not the case in Game 2. From the opening kickoff, the freshman weapons were ready. Mark Bowman looked more involved, and two freshman receivers, Kayden Dixon-Wyatt and Trent Mosley, looked like the best pass-catchers on the roster, even with Tanook Hines back in the lineup. On defense, Luke Wafle continues to make an impact. The early development of this young core is a great sign for the rest of the season.
The Passing Attack Is Ready for Ohio State and Oregon
USC's offense showed it still has that explosive passing game. Maiava threw for a very easy 349 yards and 3 touchdowns, clicking on all cylinders with his young weapons. Against a solid Fresno State defense, the passing game looked as good as it did last season. To beat elite teams like Ohio State and Oregon, the passing attack has to be special. After this performance, there is plenty of confidence that it will be.
Jide Abasiri Is the Heart of the USC Defense
Jide Abasiri has been unstoppable in the first two weeks. His breakout season is a joy to watch. He is disrupting offenses in both games, using his twitch and power to ruin game plans. If he keeps this up, he is an All-Big Ten lock. More importantly, he gives this defense the physicality it needs to avoid getting run over by the juggernauts of the Big Ten. Abasiri is the tone setter, and he has given this USC defense newfound confidence.
The Trojans are 2-0, and they look like a legitimate contender. The road ahead is tough, but with Maiava slinging it and Abasiri wrecking shop on defense, this team has the look of a winner.
