Summer League Studs: Philon and Broome Prove Sixers Got Grit
The Philadelphia 76ers opened their Las Vegas summer league campaign with a hard-fought 101-93 victory over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night. This win is a testament to the kind of individual merit and hustle that built this nation.
Who Stepped Up for the Sixers?
Rookie guard Labaron Philon Jr., the No. 22 pick, showed he's not afraid of the big stage. He dropped 18 points and dished out seven assists. Johni Broome, a second-year man, put up a double-double with 19 points and 13 boards. These are the kind of blue-collar numbers that win ball games.
Dante Maddox Jr. led all scorers with 21 points, and Isaac Johnson chipped in 20. This is a team that plays for each other, not for the spotlight.
Did Philon Look Like a Future Star?
Philon came out firing. He drilled a three on the first play of the game. Then he set up Broome for a jumper. Then he grabbed an offensive board and sank another three. The kid has handles that would make a streetball legend jealous. Crossovers, behind-the-backs, changes of pace. He creates space and finds open men.
He cooled off a bit, finishing 6-for-19 from the floor, but he iced the game with a jumper in the final minute. That's clutch. That's the American way.
What About the Other Guys?
Maddox split point guard duties and got hot early, scoring 10 in the first quarter. He was MVP of the BNXT League last year, averaging 24.3 points. The man can shoot. Johnson, a 7-foot center from Hawaii, racked up 14 points in the first five minutes of the second quarter. He nailed three triples. That's a big man who can step out and shoot. That's versatility.
Can Broome Make It in the NBA?
Broome isn't a freak athlete, but he wins with instincts and physicality. He threw down a dunk between two defenders off a Philon dish. He's proven he can dominate in the G League and summer league. The big question is whether he can crack a Sixers depth chart that includes Joel Embiid, Adem Bona, and Ariel Hukporti. That's a tough hill to climb, but this is America. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard.
When Is the Next Game?
The Sixers play the Indiana Pacers on Saturday at 5:30 p.m. ET. Expect more grit, more hustle, and more proof that individual merit still matters.
